Review of Ceado's redesigned E37S and E37J espresso coffee grinders. Marc from WholeLatteLove.com takes a look at mid-2017 design upgrades to the E37S and the new E37J. Get the results of Marc's tests for grinding speed, dose to dose weight variation of timed grinding and grind retention. E37's have a redesigned grinding chamber and delivery system. A new adjustable portafilter holder accommodates single, double and naked/bottomless PFs for hands free grinding.
Find the Right Grind
- Grind coffee into the portafilter.
- Lock the portafilter into the brew group.
- Lift the brew lever all the way up.
- Aim for 2 to 2.5 oz. in about 25 seconds.
- Drink your shot to test.
- Repeat until properly motivated to get work done.
The big secret to finding that exact flavor you're after, that big punch-in-the-mouth feel, is dialing in your grind. For a basic rule-of-thumb, a coarser grind makes for a lighter, fluffier coffee, and a finer grind makes for a more intense, flavorful espresso. Check out the video on the right for more info.
Seasoning the Burrs
Every new burr set needs to be seasoned before dosing weight becomes consistent. A common misconception is that a well seasoned set of burrs will produce better grind quality. The truth is, seasoning the burrs only improves dosing weight accuracy, so in a dosing grinder, burr seasoning doesn't make a big difference, where with a doserless grinder, you may notice a bigger difference. Typically, it takes 6-10lbs of coffee to season a set of flat steel burrs. While some manufacturers season the burrs for you, Ceado does not. The reason for this is that there are two types of seasoning. The best way is by using coffee beans or minute rice. This is time consuming, and expensive to do, so rather than raise the cost of their products, they choose not to season the burrs in this way. The second way is sandblasting, which while effective, dramatically reduces the life of your burrs. In the video on the right, Tino from Ceado and Marc from WholeLatteLove.com have a conversation around burr seasoning.
Single Dosing Trick
A popular way to cut down on waste and increase consistency in espresso brewing is single dosing. Single dosing involves weighing your coffee beans for each shot before adding them to the grinder. In order to eliminate 'popcorning', you can use a standard, 58 millimeter tamper base to cover the throat of your grinder. Marc from WholeLatteLove explains this trick more in depth in the video on the right.
