The Jura Impressa XJ9 Professional's advanced capabilities and a quiet sophistication makes it a great choice for the modern coffee and espresso lover; with enhanced storage capacities making it suitable for high volume non-commercial environments. This super-automatic espresso machine can prepare a wide variety of drinks at the touch of a button. Even milk-based specialty beverages, such as a macchiato or cappuccino can be made on demand. The Jura Impressa XJ9 Professional's programming keys have been created to be exceedingly intuitive, thanks to illuminated icons—which can be brightened or dimmed as necessary. From top to bottom, the XJ9 Professional One Touch clearly brings world-class quality to your home or office.

This Swiss-made machine comes with a 15 bar high-performance pump and thermoblock heating system. A Variable Brewing Unit lets you prepare your drinks with anywhere from 5-16 grams of coffee. The Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System is also available on this model. It is Jura’s propriety pre-infusion cycle, designed to help you extract the most flavor and aroma out of your coffee. The amount of water used per beverage, coffee strength (5 settings), brewing temperature (2 settings) and hot water temperature (3 settings) are all customizable to your liking. Jura has also outfitted this machine with a height adjustable beverage dispenser to let you brew directly into cup up to 4.4 inches tall.

The Jura Impressa XJ9 Professional comes with a Professional Cappuccino Frother, which will automatically siphon and froth/steam fresh milk for a macchiato or cappuccino. After each use, the machine will prompt you to clean the Professional Cappuccino Frother. Using the automated maintenance option, you can simply set a container beneath the frother and allow the machine to do a self rinse to keep the system in proper working condition. The XJ9's Professional Cappuccino Frother is compatible with the Jura Stainless Steel Thermal Milk Container and Cool Control Milk Container.

This machine features a generous 4-liter removable water reservoir. To ensure that beverages taste their best, the XJ9 Professional has a special, extra large, integrated Clearyl water filter. It removes minerals from tap water for great tasting drinks and helps to prevent scale buildup. An adjustable water hardness feature is also available for users who choose not to brew with filtered water.

The XJ9 Professional has three temperature settings—low, normal and high—to let you control the hot water dispenser. Turn the temperature setting to low, if you’re dispensing water to make hot chocolate for the kids, or set it on high if you prefer ultra-hot tea. Hot water is dispensed through the XJ9's new hot water spout located on the front of the machine.

The XJ9 Professional has a dedicated bean hopper with an aroma-preserving lid to let you safely store up to 17.6-ounces of whole bean coffee. If you choose to grind fresh coffee for every drink, you can do so using the conical burr grinder. It can be adjusted on a continuous scale to let you fine-tune your grind as needed. Skipping the grinding process entirely and brewing with pre-ground coffee is also possible, as the machine has an integrated bypass doser and calibrated measuring scoop.

Energy Setting

Catering to increasingly eco-conscious customers, the Jura Impressa XJ9 Professional has a patented Zero-Energy Switch. The machine is actually completely disconnected from the main power supply once it enters standby mode to ensure that it does not consume any energy. This feature will help you cut down on energy costs as well as minimize the machine’s impact on the environment.

The XJ9 Professional has integrated rinsing, cleaning and descaling programs to make machine maintenance hassle free. This aesthetically pleasing one-touch machine features a glossy chrome-plated front panel, rotary dial and high-end finishes. It measures 13.5”W x 19.7"H X 17.3"D and weighs 29 pounds.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning Coffee System

The coffee brewing system can be rinsed at any time through the maintenance menu of the machine. This does not need to be done on a particular schedule, because the machine should automatically prompt you when to complete the cleaning cycle. It is, however, necessary to run the cycle when the machine prompts you and should not be neglected. If this maintenance cycle is neglected unpleasant flavors can develop in the brewed drinks. The recommended cleaning product for this cycle is Jura-Capresso 2-Phase Cleaning Tablets. Instructions running the cleaning cycle can be found in the document below:
Brew Circuit Cleaning Instructions

Rinsing Milk System

A rinse of the milk system should be completed any day that the machine is used to make a milk based drink. The dual spout milk dispensing system must be cleaned regularly with Jura Milk System Cleaner in order to maintain proper function. Depending on how the machine is programmed, the machine may not automatically prompt you to complete this cycle.

Milk Spout Cleaning

The milk spout assembly must be taken apart for cleaning any day that the machine was used to make milk based drinks to maintain machine function and keep the parts sanitary. Instructions for cleaning the dual spout can be found on p.40 of the machine manual.

Changing Water Filter

This machine uses a Clearyl Pro Blue water filter which should be changed every 120 liters of water, or every two months; whichever comes first. Instructions for activating and installing this filter can be found in the document below:
Filter Changing Instructions

Descaling

The machine will automatically prompt you to descale. Descaling is not required if the Clearyl Pro Blue filter is installed in the machine. The only descaling product that should be used is Jura-Capresso Descaling Tablets. The frequency of descaling will depend on the hardness of the water in the machine. Instructions for descaling the machine can be found in the document below:
Descaling Instructions

Troubleshooting

No Crema or Bad Tasting Shots

Typically, issues with crema or the flavor of the shot do not indicate a malfunction of the machine. Instead, this indicates that an adjustment needs to be made in the brewing process or that different beans need to be used.

The type of bean that is being used is particularly important for super-automatic machines, because the built in burr grinders only accept certain types of beans. Another consideration is the roast of the bean, which greatly influences how much crema can be produced, as well as the flavor of the shot. Super-automatic machines are not compatible with oily, caramelized, or flavored beans. Properly stored and recently roasted beans are best. You can find more information on why bean selection and storage is important for super-automatic machines by watching the video below.

5 Things New Super Automatic Espresso Machine Owners Should Know

Appropriately adjusting the grinder is also important. Poor shots can also be the result of incorrect grind settings.

  1. If the shot is too bitter:
    1. The grind is set too fine. Try adjusting the grind to a coarser setting, typically indicated by a large dot symbol or higher number.
    2. If applicable, the aroma setting is set too high. Lower the aroma setting so that less coffee is ground per shot.
    3. The beans being used are over-roasted, and a lighter roast is needed.
  2. If the shot is too sour or weak tasting:
    1. The grind is set too coarse. Try adjusting the grind to a finer setting, indicated by a lower number. Whenever moving the grind to a finer setting it is important to make minor adjustments, and to only adjust the grinder while in operation.
  3. If there is little crema:
    1. The beans are probably stale and fresher beans need to be used.
    2. The grind setting does not match the drink that is being made. Smaller drinks such as an espresso require finer grind size; larger drinks such as a longo require a coarser grind.
    3. Oily or dark roasted beans are being used. These beans are not compatible with the unit, and are not suitable for espresso brewing. The oils and chemicals that are needed to produce a rich crema have been roasted out of the bean. Switch to a drier/lighter roast.
  4. Keep the machine properly cleaned and maintained for good tasting shots. Your grinder may need to be cleaned or calibrated, or you may need to descale your machine to remove any unwanted residues or flavors.

Flow Issues

Milk Flows Poorly/Spits

If the milk spout in flowing incorrectly or milk is spraying out then the dual spout is dirty and needs to be cleaned. Run a milk circuit cleaning cycle and disassemble the spout for cleaning. If the behavior continues replace the air intake pipe; a replacement can be found in the Welcome Pack that comes with the machine.

Little No Water/Steam From Frother

If very little water or steam is coming from the frothing wand, then the connector may be blocked by milk residues or scale buildup.

  1. Gently remove the cappuccino frother from the wand.
  2. Unscrew the black connected with the hexagonal hole on the measuring scoop that came with the machine.
  3. Clean the connector.
  4. Reattach the connector and screw it on by hand, and then gently tighten it with the scoop tool. Do not tighten it more than a quarter turn after getting the connector on hand tight or it may damage the part.

Poor Coffee Flow

There are a couple of different reasons the coffee could be flowing slowly.

  1. The coffee grind is set too fine, and the fine coffee particles are blocking the flow of water. Try adjusting the grind to a coarser setting.
  2. The Clearyl filter is blocking the flow of water, and may be due for replacement.
  3. There is scale buildup in the system and the machine should be descaled.

Grinder Issues

If the machine is not recognizing that the bean hoppers are empty, or if the machine gives a "Fill bean container" error even though the hoppers are full then the grinding mechanism needs to be cleaned. Instructions for cleaning the grinding mechanism can be found on p. 46 of the machine manual.

Empty Drip Tray Won't Clear

If the "Empty drip tray" error will not clear then the metal contacts on the drip tray are dirty or wet. Wipe the contacts off and dry them thoroughly before reinserting the tray into the machine.

Error 2

The machine was exposed to cold or freezing conditions, and the machine will not operate until the machine has reached room temperature.
