Machine Description

Continuing Jura’s tradition of innovation and excellence, the Jura Impressa Z6 with P.E.P. is a bean to cup coffee center with 12 programmable one-touch beverage options and a number of innovations that raise the bar for automatic espresso brewing. Taking its name from the unique pulse extraction process used to produce specialty beverages of greater intensity and flavor, the Z6 is equipped with Jura’s latest Aroma G3 grinder for faster and quieter grinding and an RFID capable water reservoir for intelligent water filtration. Rounding out the package are Jura’s rotary switch and the full color TFT display that makes navigation and programming easy and intuitive so you can spend less time waiting and more time enjoying the coffee you love.

The Z6 offers 12 customizable one-touch drink options the can selected from the menu on the TFT display. Jura allows you to program each aspect of the drink down to your exact specifications and you can even give nicknames to your favorite beverages. The machine brews with a 15 bar high-performance pump and stainless steel-lined, aluminum thermoblock heating system. The Variable Brewing Unit lets you prepare your drinks with anywhere from 5-16 grams of coffee and the Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System (I.P.B.A.S.) soaks the grounds prior to brewing for richer espresso extraction. The amount of water used per beverage, coffee strength (10 settings), brewing temperature (3 settings) and hot water temperature (3 settings) can all be programmed to your liking. Both the coffee and milk spouts are height adjustable to accommodate cups between 3.2 - 6 inches (coffee) and 3.2 - 6 inches (milk) respectively. Both spouts can be set to illuminate your cups with white or amber light while brewing.

Jura's pursuit of espresso perfection has also led to the development of the Aroma G3 grinder. Using conical steel burrs, the Aroma G3 grinds quickly and gently thanks to the perfected cutting angles that produce 60% less residual grounds. The result is a quieter grinder that preserves more of the flavor and aroma of the freshly ground beans while operating twice as fast. Depending on your preferences, the grinder can be set to one of six degrees of fineness. The bean hopper located on top of the machine prevents beans from clumping with a vented design that feeds them separately into the grinder. The hopper can hold up to 9.9 oz. of whole bean coffee and features an aroma preservation lid to seal in freshness. Lastly, the hopper actively monitors the level of beans and will alert you when it needs to be refilled. The Z6 is also equipped with a bypass doser that allows you to fill the brew group directly using pre-ground coffee.

In order to produce hotter milk beverages quicker than ever, the milk system on the Z6 has no wait time when transitioning between frothed and steamed milk. Milk volumes for all beverages can be adjusted by time (in seconds) with specific durations set for your preferred type of milk (steamed or frothed). Additionally, milk temperature can be set to one of 10 settings for both steaming and frothing for incredibly customizable beverage specialties. The milk spouts also double as a hot water dispenser for drinks like tea and cocoa and can be set to dispense at one of 3 temperature settings with adjustable volume.

The water reservoir features a number of unique attributes that distinguish it from other Jura models. Located on the left side of the machine, the reservoir can hold up to 81 oz. and features blue light illumination. The Z6 is one of the first Jura machines to use RFID technology for automatic recognition of water filters and accurate monitoring of their lifespan. For easier access and refilling, the water reservoir is completely removable from the front of the machine.

Navigating the menus of the Z6 is made easy and intuitive thanks to the rotary switch and full color TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display. The rotary switch (a Jura innovation) makes it easy to browse and select beverages, program drink settings and other menu options. The vibrant full color display showcases all possible drink options and displays the status of the beverage you're currently brewing. The display also provides assistance in the form of maintenance alerts to let you know when machine needs your attention.

To save energy when not in use, the Z6 features an energy save function and a Zero-Energy Switch. When in Energy Save Mode (E.S.M) the machine enters a low power mode to reduce consumption from 16 watt-hour to 6 watt-hour. This feature will help you cut down on energy costs as well as minimize the machine’s impact on the environment.

The Z6 has integrated rinsing, cleaning and descaling programs and can be programmed with your water hardness for more accurate maintenance feedback. The machine also monitors the levels of the water reservoir, bean hopper and drip tray. Alerts are communicated via the TFT display when something needs to be addressed. Included with the machine is a multi-compartment milk system container designed for use when cleaning the milk spouts with Jura's Rinza milk frother cleaner.

Basic Usage

Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning Coffee System

The coffee brewing system can be rinsed at any time through the maintenance menu of the machine. This does not need to be done on a particular schedule, because the machine should automatically prompt you when to complete the cleaning cycle. It is, however, necessary to run the cycle when the machine prompts you and should not be neglected. If this maintenance cycle is neglected unpleasant flavors can develop in the brewed drinks. The recommended cleaning product for this cycle is Jura-Capresso 2-Phase Cleaning Tablets.

Rinsing Milk System

A rinse of the milk system should be completed any day that the machine is used to make a milk based drink. The dual spout milk dispensing system must be cleaned regularly with Jura Milk System Cleaner in order to maintain proper function. Depending on how the machine is programmed, the machine may not automatically prompt you to complete this cycle.

Dual Spout Cleaning

The milk spout assembly must be taken apart for cleaning any day that the machine was used to make milk based drinks to maintain machine function and keep the parts sanitary. The disassembly and cleaning instructions for this spout can be found in the video below:

Changing Water Filter

This machine uses a Clearyl Smart water filter automatically prompts you on when to change the water filter. Instructions for activating and installing this filter can be found on pp.39-40 of the machine manual. Use of this filter means that you do not have to descale the machine.

Descaling

The machine will automatically prompt you to descale. Descaling is not required if the Clearyl Smart filter is installed in the machine. The only descaling product that should be used is Jura-Capresso Descaling Tablets. The frequency of descaling will depend on the hardness of the water in the machine. Instructions for descaling the machine can be found on pp.46-48 of the machine manual.

Troubleshooting

No Crema or Bad Tasting Shots

Typically, issues with crema or the flavor of the shot do not indicate a malfunction of the machine. Instead, this indicates that an adjustment needs to be made in the brewing process or that different beans need to be used.

The type of bean that is being used is particularly important for super-automatic machines, because the built in burr grinders only accept certain types of beans. Another consideration is the roast of the bean, which greatly influences how much crema can be produced, as well as the flavor of the shot. Super-automatic machines are not compatible with oily, caramelized, or flavored beans. Properly stored and recently roasted beans are best. You can find more information on why bean selection and storage is important for super-automatic machines by watching the video below.

Appropriately adjusting the grinder is also important. Poor shots can also be the result of incorrect grind settings.

  1. If the shot is too bitter:
    1. The grind is set too fine. Try adjusting the grind to a coarser setting, typically indicated by a large dot symbol or higher number.
    2. If applicable, the aroma setting is set too high. Lower the aroma setting so that less coffee is ground per shot.
    3. The beans being used are over-roasted, and a lighter roast is needed.
  2. If the shot is too sour or weak tasting:
    1. The grind is set too coarse. Try adjusting the grind to a finer setting, indicated by a lower number. Whenever moving the grind to a finer setting it is important to make minor adjustments, and to only adjust the grinder while in operation.
  3. If there is little crema:
    1. The beans are probably stale and fresher beans need to be used.
    2. The grind setting does not match the drink that is being made. Smaller drinks such as an espresso require finer grind size; larger drinks such as a longo require a coarser grind.
    3. Oily or dark roasted beans are being used. These beans are not compatible with the unit, and are not suitable for espresso brewing. The oils and chemicals that are needed to produce a rich crema have been roasted out of the bean. Switch to a drier/lighter roast.
  4. Keep the machine properly cleaned and maintained for good tasting shots. Your grinder may need to be cleaned or calibrated, or you may need to descale your machine to remove any unwanted residues or flavors.

Flow Issues

Milk Flows Poorly/Spits

If the milk spout is flowing incorrectly or milk is spraying out then the milk spout is dirty and needs to be cleaned. Run a milk circuit cleaning cycle and disassemble the spout for cleaning.

Little No Water/Steam From Frother

If very little water or steam is coming from the frothing wand, then the connector may be blocked by milk residues or scale buildup.

  1. Gently remove the cappuccino frother from the wand.
  2. Unscrew the black connected with the hexagonal hole on the measuring scoop that came with the machine.
  3. Clean the connector.
  4. Reattach the connector and screw it on by hand, and then gently tighten it with the scoop tool. Do not tighten it more than a quarter turn after getting the connector on hand tight or it may damage the part.

Poor Coffee Flow

There are a couple of different reasons the coffee could be flowing slowly.

  1. The coffee grind is set too fine, and the fine coffee particles are blocking the flow of water. Try adjusting the grind to a coarser setting.
  2. The Clearyl filter is blocking the flow of water, and may be due for replacement.
  3. There is scale buildup in the system and the machine should be descaled.

Grinder Issues

If the machine is not recognizing that the bean hoppers are empty, or if the machine gives a "Fill bean container" error even though the hoppers are full then the grinding mechanism needs to be cleaned. Instructions for cleaning the grinding mechanism can be found on p. 48 of the machine manual.

Empty Drip Tray Won't Clear

If the "Empty drip tray" error will not clear then the metal contacts on the drip tray are dirty or wet. Wipe the contacts off and dry them thoroughly before reinserting the tray into the machine.

Error 2/Error 5

The machine was exposed to cold or freezing conditions, and the machine will not operate until the machine has reached room temperature.
